My name is Mata - I'm 9 years old and I am a BMX racer [ 5th July 2024]

[ Written with Aunty Tania ]

Hey there! 🌟 My name is BMXMata, and I'm a 9-year-old BMX racing kid who's passionate about high-speed fun and awesome tricks. Ever since I hopped on my first bike, I knew BMX was my thing, and I've already got some seriously cool achievements under my belt! 🏆

This year, I trained hard for the UCI BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA. Months of intense training, early morning practices, and unwavering dedication paid off as I won all my races leading up to the final. It felt amazing! 💪

Playing other sports like soccer and basketball helps keep training fun, thanks to my supportive dad. And I'm not alone in this journey — My 7-year-old brother also trained hard and won the New Zealand National Title (NZ1). We were both thrilled to compete together at the Worlds. 🥳 Racing alongside my brother made every competition even more special.

My papa tells me that even though I'm a solo competitor, BMX racing is a shared sport with family and friends, our BMXNZ community supports all our clubs and other riders.

During the final race at the Worlds, something unexpected happened—a massive crash involving four other riders caused a huge mix-up, and I came off my bike. It was a crazy experience; it felt like everything was in slow-motion as I hit the ground. But crashing is part of the sport, and it only makes me more determined to come back stronger next time. I learned valuable lessons about resilience from that experience.

Now, I'm gearing up for the 2025 BMX World Championships in Copenhagen. To qualify, I'll need to continue my rigorous training and compete in key events under the BMXNZ rules in New Zealand. It’s going to be an exciting journey, and I can’t wait to give it my all!

Off the track, I'm just a regular kid who loves making new friends, playing video games, and spending time with my family. You can follow my adventures and check out my trick tips on my youtube channel @bmxmata

🚵‍♂️💨

Stay awesome,

Bmxmata
